Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso on Monday, January 19, ordered the planting of an initial 100,000 bamboo trees along Roxas Boulevard, Road 10 (R-10), and other major thoroughfares in the city as part of Manila’s flood control and environmental initiatives.
Domagoso said the bamboo planting program aims to reinforce riverbanks and help reduce the impact of flooding during the rainy season.
“We are doing a reinforcement in the riverside by planting bamboos all over the banks, so it will help control the flood water that we're going to suffer again,” the mayor said.
He acknowledged that flooding remains a recurring problem during the wet season but noted that bamboo growth could help lower water levels and improve air quality across the city.
“The people of Manila deserve better things from their government, so that’s now our policy: 100,000 trees,” Domagoso added.
The city government said the initial phase of the program will focus on major roads and flood-prone areas, with further expansion expected in the coming months.
