Mayor Isko Moreno led the Chinese New Year countdown in Binondo, Manila on Tuesday, February 17, urging unity, peace, and stronger relations between the Philippines and China as the capital welcomed the Year of the Dragon.

Speaking before thousands gathered in the world’s oldest Chinatown, Moreno emphasized Manila’s enduring ties with the Filipino-Chinese community and its vital role in the city’s cultural and economic life. Among the guests was Jing Quan, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Philippines.

The mayor expressed optimism over expanding tourism and trade cooperation, noting plans to increase flight connectivity from China to key Philippine destinations such as Cebu. He said additional routes would mean more tourists, more investments, and more employment opportunities for Filipinos.

Moreno assured both local and foreign entrepreneurs that Manila remains open for business, pledging fair governance and protection to ensure a stable environment for growth.

Highlighting shared history, Moreno reminded the public—especially the youth—of the Filipino-Chinese community’s contributions to nation-building, including their role during World War II and the legacy of civic leaders such as Roman Ongpin. He encouraged Manileños to visit Bahay Tsinoy to better understand the sacrifices and heritage that bind the two cultures.

Moreno also cited improving local indicators, reporting a 104 percent increase in new business registrations from January 1 to February 13, 2026, compared to the same period last year, alongside a 13% drop in crime in the previous quarter. He closed his message with a call for harmony and collective action, expressing hope for peace not only in Manila but across the country and neighboring nations.
