Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso has pledged a ₱25,000 subsidy to community bakeries in Manila to help keep bread prices stable amid rising costs driven by the ongoing oil crisis.
During a meeting at City Hall on Thursday, April 9, the mayor said participating bakeries must maintain current prices of staple breads such as pandesal, monay, and Spanish bread for 30 days in exchange for the financial assistance.
Domagoso explained that increasing production costs—estimated at around ₱2,165 per sack of flour—are largely driven by flour and yeast expenses.
By subsidizing these key ingredients, the city aims to ease the burden on local bakers and prevent price hikes for consumers.
The initiative targets small community bakeries, which the mayor described as essential to daily life, particularly for working-class families and students.
The Asosasyon ng Panaderong Pilipino (APP) welcomed the move, with its president, Chito Chavez, praising the city government for providing timely support to the baking sector.
