The effusive eruption of Mayon Volcano has continued for the 27th consecutive day, producing incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or “uson,” and frequent rockfall events, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

As of Sunday, February 1, the lava flows have reached radial distances from the crater of 3.7 kilometers in the Basud (east), 1.6 kilometers in the Bonga (southeast), and 1.3 kilometers in the Mi-isi Gullies, taken from VMLH (Ligñon Hill) IP Camera.

The agency reported on Monday, February 2, that Mayon Volcano in Albay remains under Alert Level 3, indicating ongoing magmatic unrest.

In Phivolcs’ 24-hour monitoring period from 12 a.m. on January 1 to 12 a.m. on February 2, the volcano logged five volcanic earthquakes, 317 rockfall events, and 30 pyroclastic density currents (PDCs).

Phivolcs also noted that the crater glow remained visible, indicating the presence of hot magma near the surface.

The volcano was frequently obscured by clouds, while ground deformation data showed continued inflation, a sign that magma is still accumulating beneath the edifice.

Meanwhile, sulfur dioxide emission was not measured during the period due to monitoring limitations.

Phivolcs urged the public to keep out of the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), as well as the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ).

The agency also warned against flying any aircraft close to the volcano due to the risk posed by ash and volcanic debris.

Under Alert Level 3, Phivolcs emphasized Mayon may generate hazards such as rockfalls, landslides or avalanches, ballistic fragments, lava flows and lava fountaining, pyroclastic density currents, moderate explosions, and rainfall-induced lahars.
