Renewed activity was recorded at Mayon Volcano over the past 24 hours, with state volcanologists noting fresh pyroclastic flows and dozens of volcanic earthquakes as unrest continues under Alert Level 3.

In its latest bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said successive pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) were observed along the Mi-isi Gully, signaling ongoing instability in the volcano’s slopes. These fast-moving currents of hot gas and volcanic material remain confined within the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), but are among the most hazardous manifestations of volcanic activity.

The agency also recorded 32 volcanic earthquakes, including 25 tremors lasting between 2 to 15 minutes, indicating sustained magma movement beneath the volcano. In addition, 284 rockfall events and 14 PDC signals were detected during the monitoring period from 12:00 a.m. May 2 to 12:00 a.m. May 3.

Lava effusion continues, feeding flows that have reached 3.8 kilometers in Basud Gully, 3.2 kilometers in Bonga Gully, and 1.6 kilometers in Mi-isi Gully. These were accompanied by episodic minor Strombolian eruptions and short-lived lava fountaining at the summit crater.

A moderate plume drifting west-northwest and a fair crater glow visible at night further indicate that magma remains close to the surface. Sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 1,586 tonnes per day as of May 1.

Ground deformation data showed short-term deflation of the edifice, alongside localized inflation on the northeastern flank—an indication of shifting magma beneath the volcano.

PHIVOLCS maintained Alert Level 3 (intensified magmatic unrest) over Mayon, warning that hazardous events such as lava flows, PDCs, rockfalls, and possible moderate explosions may continue.

Authorities reiterated that entry into the 6-kilometer PDZ and flying close to the volcano are strictly prohibited, while communities near the volcano are urged to remain alert, especially during heavy rains that may trigger lahars.
