Mayon Volcano emits ‘uson’; Ashfall hits parts of Albay
by Luwela Amor02 May 2026

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported on Saturday afternoon, May 2, an ongoing pyroclastic density current, locally known as “uson,” along the slopes of Mayon Volcano in Albay.

Footage released by PHIVOLCS showed a lava flow collapse-fed pyroclastic density current descending the southwestern slopes of the volcano at around 5:38 p.m.

The state volcanologists noted continued activity along the Mi-isi gully on the south-southwestern flank.

According to Phivolcs, Mayon Volcano's southwestern slopes collapsed due to a lava flow-led PDCs.

Ashfall from the eruption blanketed several areas across the Bicol Region, with reduced visibility reported in multiple localities.

The Albay provincial government said that as of 6 p.m., some parts of Guinobatan and Camalig experienced near-zero visibility due to heavy ashfall.

The ash plume was also clearly visible from nearby towns, including Daraga.

Albay Governor Noel Rosal urged residents and travelers to exercise caution, particularly those passing through affected areas. He advised the public to avoid travel in zones with heavy ashfall if possible.

Rosal also called on residents affected by ashfall to remain indoors for safety. He announced that 250 boxes of face masks would be distributed through Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management offices (MDRRMO) in Guinobatan, Camalig, Ligao, and Daraga.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, indicating an increased likelihood of hazardous eruptions.

Entry into the six-kilometer permanent danger zone remains strictly prohibited.
