Mayon logs 290 rockfalls, 30 volcanic quakes; Alert Level 3 remains

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded a total of 290 rockfall events and 30 volcanic earthquakes at Mayon Volcano over the past 24 hours, according to its bulletin released Friday, May 8.

PHIVOLCS also logged 15 volcanic tremors that lasted from four to 35 minutes, as well as three episodes of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or “uson,” which are fast-moving flows of hot gas and volcanic material.

Authorities further confirmed lava effusion from the summit crater, with lava flows observed advancing through the Basud at 3.8 km, Bonga at 3.2 km, and Mi-isi at 1.6 km gullies.

PHIVOLCS also detected episodic weak strombolian activity at the Mayon.

Visual observations showed fair crater glow visible to the naked eye, while the volcanic plume remained largely obscured.

Sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 2,272 tonnes per day on May 7, while ground deformation data indicated short-term deflation of the volcano edifice, with inflation detected on its northeastern flank.

PHIVOLCS maintained Alert Level 3, meaning hazardous eruption remains possible.

The agency reiterated that entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited, along with restrictions on aircraft flying near the volcano.

Authorities also warned of possible hazards, including rockfalls, landslides, ballistic fragments, lava flows, pyroclastic density currents, moderate explosions, and lahar flows during heavy rainfall.
