Tropical cyclone wind signals were hoisted over several areas in Luzon on Wednesday, as Maymay intensified into a tropical storm, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its 5 a.m. weather bulletin on Aug. 5, the state weather bureau said the center of Maymay was located 170 kilometers west-northwest of Bacnotan, La Union.

The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center, with gusts of up to 80 kph, and was moving slowly eastward.

PAGASA said Maymay is forecast to continue moving generally eastward and may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union by Wednesday afternoon or evening.

After landfall, the weather bureau said the tropical cyclone is expected to traverse the landmass of Northern and Central Luzon until Thursday, Aug. 6.

Maymay is forecast to remain a tropical storm before making landfall but is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by Thursday morning as it crosses Luzon. It may further weaken into a low-pressure area by Thursday afternoon or evening.

PAGASA also warned that heavy rainfall and damaging winds may still be experienced in areas outside the forecast landfall point and the forecast confidence cone, adding that the track could still shift within the forecast range.
