The Mary The Queen Subdivision in Barangay San Sebastian, Hagonoy, Bulacan has been known as a “ghost town” after a majority of its residents abandoned their homes due to the area's perpetually waterlogged state.

According to a Monday report by RH 15 Jecelle Ricafort, the floodwaters in the residential area have not been completely drained for seven years now.

Former residents of the subdivision homes are also unable to sell their properties due to the poor condition of the place.

There are barely any people left in the subdivision, the only sounds in the area being the barking of some dogs, sloshing water, and an ever-present silence.

Cesar Aranas, 76, who has been a resident of Mary The Queen for 15 years, told DZRH that the water has not subsided in over seven years.

He said that typhoons and the southwest monsoon or “Habagat” worsens the high tide that has always afflicted the area.

Aranas said that although his neighbors have all packed their belongings and left, he cannot leave his only home, which his son had bought for him.

Speaking to Ricafort, Home Owners Association President Luisito Juliano confirmed that floodwaters had not left the subdivision in seven years.

Juliano disclosed that around 75 percent of the 300 houses have already been abandoned. Sadly, the lack of residents seems to attract thieves, he added.

“Kung mayroon tayong tinatawag na flood control project, ang natira nalang po sa amin ay flood, nawala na po ‘yung control,” Juliano said.

“‘Yun nga ‘yung ikinababahala na ng mga mamamayan dito, na baka sakaling dumating ‘yung panahon, ‘yung isang magandang komunidad, ay maging isang ghost town na din po,” he added.
