Marikina City gov't blames faulty pumping station for flooding in two barangays

The Marikina City government blamed a faulty pumping station for flooding in parts of Barangays Malanday and Tumana on Sunday, August 9, amid heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon or 'habagat.'

According to a DZRH's Dos Por Dos report by RH Edniel Parrosa, although the Marikina River did not overflow despite reaching the second alarm level, several streets in the two barangays were flooded.

Marikina Mayor Maan Teodoro said the pumping station in Tumana, which is still under the management of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), was not functioning during the heavy rains.

Teodoro said the city government has long been waiting for the pumping station to be turned over to them so it could be properly operated and maintained, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

“We have been waiting for the longest time na iturnover yan sa city para mapagana na at masiguradong maayos ang pagpapatakbo,” Teodoro told DZRH News.

“He [Sec. Vince Dizon] promised that they will just make some rectifications and turn it over sa city,” she added.

She noted that there were no ‘significant incidents’ in Marikina apart from the flooding experienced in some areas.

The city government is investigating why the pumping station failed to operate. Initial information indicated that the facility was heavily clogged with garbage.

The flooding was not caused by the Marikina River spilling into residential areas, the city government said. Instead, rainwater accumulated in the affected areas because it could not be pumped out through the drainage system.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and DPWH deployed mobile pumps to help remove floodwaters from the affected areas.
