Actress and television host Mariel Rodriguez Padilla has clarified her 2022 remarks about her husband, Senator Robin Padilla, after an old vlog resurfaced online and drew criticism over her statement linking him to the passage of Republic Act No. 8294.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, August 9, Mariel explained that the vlog was made in response to critics who questioned Robin’s qualifications to become a senator, particularly his educational background and ability to make laws.
“Common sense is most uncommon,” Mariel began. “Siyempre, you have to be a legislator to actually make and pass a law.”
Mariel said Robin was not a senator when RA 8294 was enacted in 1997. The law amended provisions concerning illegal possession, manufacture, acquisition, and disposition of firearms and ammunition. Robin, who was incarcerated at the time over an illegal firearms possession case, later became closely associated with the law because it affected his case.
“Robin was NOT a senator then, and I never meant that he literally sat in Congress, authored the bill, and voted for its passage,” she said.
According to Mariel, her point was that Robin’s personal experience demonstrated how laws and changes in legislation could directly affect an individual’s life.
“His experience was being cited to show that even before becoming a senator, he had firsthand experience of how laws—and changes in laws—can directly affect a person’s life,” she added.
Mariel further described Robin as a “case study” in discussions surrounding the amendment.
“Siya po kasi ‘yung dahilan kung bakit nabuo ‘yung pag-amend noong batas na ‘yon known as the Robin Padilla law,” she said.
She concluded her clarification by emphasizing the importance of understanding the context of her previous remarks.
“Context matters. Comprehension matters too,” Mariel said.
Robin Padilla was convicted of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in 1995 and was released from prison in 1998 after receiving a conditional pardon. He was granted an absolute pardon in 2016, restoring his civil and political rights, before entering politics and being elected senator in 2022.
