President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of sports development and announced increased government support for athletics during his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Marcos said the government has tripled its support for the sports sector, stressing that investments in athletics are not only for entertainment but also for promoting health and encouraging more Filipinos to participate in sports.

The president highlighted the achievements and influence of Filipino tennis star Alex Eala, saying the country’s support for her journey could inspire more young Filipinos to engage in sports.

Marcos also recognized the success of the Philippine women’s football team, expressing hope that their achievements would help popularize football in the country and encourage more Filipinos to take up the sport.

The president said continued investment in sports is part of the government’s efforts to promote a healthier population, develop Filipino athletes, and strengthen the country’s presence in international competitions.
