President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to honor the sacrifices of the country's heroes by strengthening national unity and working together for the common good as the nation marked the 128th anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on Friday, June 12.

In his Independence Day message, Marcos said the historic declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898 marked a defining moment when Filipinos asserted their right to govern themselves and determine their own destiny.

He noted that despite wars, crises, and uncertainty throughout the years, the Filipino spirit endured and the nation's determination to build a better Philippines prevailed.

"As we honor this day, we are reminded that freedom is not merely a legacy we inherit but a responsibility we must uphold," the President said.

Marcos emphasized that while past generations fought colonial oppression through revolution, reform, and intellectual resistance, Filipinos today face different challenges, including protecting truth from distortion, using technology wisely, and restoring trust amid growing division and distrust.

"How we respond to these demands will shape the course of our nation and define what we pass on to future generations," he said.

The Chief Executive also urged Filipinos to pay tribute not only to the heroes who secured the country's liberty but also to fellow citizens who have devoted their lives to advancing the common good.

He expressed hope that the commemoration would deepen the people's understanding of the nation's history and inspire a renewed sense of duty to the country.

"Through active citizenship, good governance, and solidarity, may we continue building a Bagong Pilipinas worthy of the sacrifices that secured our sovereignty and of the dreams and aspirations that gave birth to our Republic," Marcos said.

The President extended his greetings to Filipinos in the country and abroad and wished everyone a meaningful celebration of Independence Day.
