President Ferdinand “Bongbong“ Marcos Jr. will review proposed legislation seeking to declare February 25, the anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, as a regular national holiday, Malacañang said Tuesday.

In a radio interview, Palace Press Officer Usec. Claire Castro said that the President is open to study the provisions of the bills filed in Congress.

“Ibigay lang po nila ang version nila kay Pangulo para maaral at kung maisusumite po nila ito, ‘yan ay aaksyunan ng gobyerno,” Castro said. “Kasi babasahin pa po kung ano ang mga provision.”

She added that the government is also weighing the economic impact, noting that frequent holidays can affect businesses.

“‘Yung iba umaaray na rin ‘yung ibang mga businessman. Yung ibang kababayan po natin sa negosyo, medyo kapag madalasan ang pagholiday ay umaaray po sila. Isa rin po ito sa tinitingnan ng pangulo,” Castro said.

Currently, February 25 is observed as a special working day. Castro explained that while people are free to commemorate the event, the government must balance the observance with economic considerations.

The move follows the filing of House Bill 7911 by Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno and allied lawmakers. The bill seeks to declare February 25 of every year as a “regular national holiday” to commemorate the People Power Revolution and the restoration of democracy in the Philippines.

“The EDSA People Power Revolution demonstrated to the world the sovereign will of a united people committed to freedom, constitutional government, and rule of law,” the bill states.

Earlier, ML Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima, joined by Kiko Aquino Dee, grandson of Ninoy and Cory Aquino, also filed a bill to commemortae the EDSA People Power Revolution as a regular non-working holiday.

On 2023, Marcos has removed the EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary as a public holiday, ending its annual recognition as a nationwide commemoration of the historic revolt that toppled his father’s dictatorship in 1986.
