President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will undertake a state visit to Japan from May 26 to 29, 2026, upon the invitation of the Japanese government, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) announced on Friday.

During the visit, the First Couple is scheduled to be received by Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan at the Imperial Palace. The official welcome will include a ceremonial reception, a state call, and a state banquet in honor of the Philippine delegation.

Marcos is also set to hold a summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, where both leaders are expected to discuss the continued strengthening of the Philippines–Japan strategic partnership.

Key agenda items include energy cooperation, food security, maritime security, and other pressing regional and global issues.

According to the PCO, the President will likewise engage with Japanese business leaders to promote economic cooperation and investment opportunities between the two countries. He is also expected to meet with members of the Filipino community in Japan.

“The President is scheduled to meet with Japanese business groups and the members of the Filipino community in Japan as part of his official engagements during the State Visit,” the PCO said.

The upcoming visit will mark the first Philippine presidential state visit to Japan since former President Benigno S. Aquino III’s trip in June 2015. It also comes as the Philippines and Japan commemorate the 70th anniversary of the normalization of their diplomatic relations.

The last Japanese imperial state visit to the Philippines was undertaken by Their Majesties Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko in January 2016.
