President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. publicly acknowledged the leadership of Senator Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian during his speech celebrating the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day on Friday.

Speaking at the Quirino Grandstand before government officials, foreign diplomats, and the public, Marcos formally addressed Gatchalian as the Senate President Pro Tempore while recognizing key leaders of the legislative branch. Gatchalian was seated near House Speaker Faustino Dy during the ceremony.

“House Speaker Faustino Dy and the honorable members of the House of Representatives; Senate President Pro Tem Sherwin Gatchalian,” Marcos said, before continuing his acknowledgment of other officials present.

The President was met with loud cheers from the crowd after mentioning Gatchalian, who represented the Senate during the Independence Day event.

Marcos was also seen exchanging handshakes with the senator following the wreath-laying and flag-raising ceremonies at Rizal Park.

Malacañang earlier signaled its recognition of Gatchalian’s leadership role in the Senate. The House of Representatives also acknowledged his position.

Gatchalian’s bloc previously secured a quorum on June 3, allowing him to be installed as Senate President Pro Tempore and acting Senate President after a period of leadership deadlock in the upper chamber.

However, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has maintained that he remains Senate President.
