President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York during his visit to the United States, the Malacañang said on Tuesday.
The bilateral meeting covered several areas of cooperation between the Philippines and the United Nations, including Manila’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.
According to Malacañang, the election for the Security Council post is scheduled on June 3, 2026.
Officials said the meeting highlighted the "Philippines’ long-standing partnership with the UN and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation, particularly as reflected in its Security Council candidature."
The Philippines is seeking the rotating seat as part of its continued engagement with the UN on global peace, security, and development issues.
Marcos was accompanied in the meeting by Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Enrique Manalo, Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez, and Acting Presidential Communications Secretary Dave Gomez.
