President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday commemorated Ninoy Aquino Day by urging Filipinos to draw lessons from the life and legacy of former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and remain vigilant against disinformation, division, distrust, and civic indifference.

In his message marking the 43rd death anniversary of former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., Marcos called on Filipinos to uphold freedom, democracy and the rule of law while strengthening the country’s democratic institutions.

“The memory of Ninoy Aquino reminds us of the courage of Filipinos to stand by their convictions and contribute to our nation's democratic journey,” Marcos said.

“Ninoy Aquino Day, therefore, invites us to acknowledge the past and draw from it the resolve needed to safeguard freedom, strengthen our institutions, and deepen national unity,” he added.

Marcos said the challenges facing Philippine democracy may have changed over time, but the public’s responsibility to protect and reinforce it remains.

“Disinformation, division, distrust, and civic indifference underscore the importance of active engagement in our nation's affairs,” he said.

The President said Aquino’s legacy should inspire Filipinos to face current challenges with vigilance and faith in the Filipino people as they work toward meaningful progress.

“Ninoy's legacy encourages us to meet these challenges with vigilance and faith in the Filipino people as we work together to deliver meaningful progress for all,“ the President added.

He also emphasized that freedom carries a “collective duty to respect the dignity and rights“ of others and contribute to the nation’s welfare.

“For its part, this administration will remain steadfast in protecting our sovereignty, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that the liberty we cherish is matched by real opportunities for every Filipino,” Marcos said.

He called on Filipinos to carry forward the lessons of history as the country works toward a more peaceful and prosperous “Bagong Pilipinas.”

Aquino was a leading opposition figure during the administration of Marcos’ father, the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. He was assassinated on August 21, 1983, shortly after returning to the Philippines from exile in the United States.

His death became a pivotal event that fueled public unrest and eventually led to the 1986 People Power Revolution.
