President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the graft conviction of his mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, saying the cases that had been hanging for decades are now over.

“I'm glad that case is over. It's been hanging over our heads for about 40 years. All those cases were filed in 1986. And that's how long it's taken,” Marcos said on Sunday in an interview with reporters in India.

The High Court acquitted the 97-year-old Imelda of seven counts of graft involving Swiss foundations, ruling that prosecutors failed to prove her guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The President said that he is happy especially for his mother as she "doesn't have to be worried about" the case any longer.

Asked whether the SC ruling could influence his choice of the next Chief Justice, Marcos firmly denied any connection between the two.

“That's the first time I made any connection between the choice of Chief Justice. That's never been and that will never enter our thinking in any way,” he said.
