President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. is considering the construction of debris barriers, or “sabo dams,” in the upper portions of dams as an immediate measure to help prevent flooding and keep waterways clear.
Marcos raised the proposal Wednesday, Sept. 2, during an inspection of the Sto. Cristo Dam in Lubao, Pampanga, where he observed that the structure was not damaged but had been blocked by debris, particularly logs. The blockage forced floodwaters to carve out another path, causing nearby objects to be swept away.
