President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared Sept. 14, 2026, a special non-working day in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to give residents time to participate in the region’s first regular parliamentary elections.

The declaration was made under Proclamation No. 1395, issued by Acting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto on behalf of Marcos.

The first Bangsamoro parliamentary elections were reset to Sept. 14, or the second Monday of September 2026, under Republic Act No. 12317, which amended the Bangsamoro Organic Law, or Republic Act No. 11054.

According to the proclamation, the holiday will give residents of BARMM the opportunity to “actively and fully participate” in the elections and exercise their right to vote.

The special non-working day will apply throughout the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The parliamentary elections are a key step in establishing the regular political institutions of the autonomous region, which was created under the Bangsamoro Organic Law.

The election date was reset through Republic Act No. 12317, which amended the law’s provisions governing the first parliamentary elections.
