Senator Rodante Marcoleta vowed to respond to the plunder and bribery allegations against him “in the proper forum, calmly, firmly, and with evidence,” as he delivered a privilege speech addressing the Office of the Ombudsman’s recommendation to file charges over alleged ₱75 million in campaign donations.
The Office of the Ombudsman has reportedly recommended the filing of plunder and bribery charges against Marcoleta in connection with alleged campaign contributions received in the previous election cycle. The senator strongly rejected the allegations, describing them as politically motivated and lacking evidence.
In his privilege speech, Marcoleta said he was “stunned” by the complaint filed by the Field Investigation Bureau of the Office of the Ombudsman for Luzon, claiming it was “perfectly timed” and aimed at undermining his independence as a lawmaker.
He maintained that the allegations were based on suspicion rather than proof, arguing that “accusation is not evidence” and that campaign support or donations do not automatically constitute corruption without a clear link to any illegal act.
“The complaint speaks of amounts, dates, and suspicion. But suspicion is not evidence. Amount is not corruption,” Marcoleta said, insisting that no official act, vote, or government favor was exchanged in relation to the alleged donations.
He also framed the case as part of a broader attempt to pressure independent voices in the Senate amid ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities in government projects and upcoming impeachment-related proceedings.
Despite the accusations, Marcoleta emphasized that he would not be intimidated and would continue performing his legislative duties, including participating in Senate inquiries and constitutional processes.
“I will answer this complaint in the proper forum, calmly, firmly, and with evidence,” he reiterated, adding that he will not surrender his independence as a senator.
He further called on authorities to ensure fairness and equal application of the law, stressing that accountability should apply to all public officials without exception.
