Filipino surfer John Mark “Marama” Tokong wrapped up his debut campaign in the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour Philippines Pro on Monday after falling to Australian world No. 7 Ethan Ewing in Round 2 at Cloud 9 in Siargao.
Tokong scored 11.54 points but fell short against Ewing, who posted 14.50 points to advance to the next round.
Despite the loss, the Siargao native made history on Sunday after scoring a major upset over Brazilian world No. 11 Samuel Pupo in the opening round.
Competing as a wild-card entry, Tokong tallied 16.60 points, including waves scored at 8.60 and 8.00, to defeat Pupo, who finished with 11.00 points.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) said Tokong gave the home crowd a performance to remember, adding that competing in the historic event was already a victory for the Filipino surfer, even without advancing further.
Tokong's Round 1 triumph marked a significant moment for Philippine surfing, as he showcased the country's homegrown talent against some of the world's best surfers on his home waves.
The WSL Championship Tour Philippines Pro brought elite international surfing competition to Siargao, with Tokong's historic win highlighting the Filipino spirit on the sport's global stage.
