The Manila city government will roll out a five-day free rides program starting Monday, March 30, in response to the continued increase in fuel prices and ongoing transport challenges.

Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso announced on Friday that more than 1,400 public utility jeepneys (PUJs) will be hired and deployed under the “Libreng Sakay” initiative to assist commuters affected by higher transportation costs and limited public transit options.

“Pwede ko bang hiramin ang mga jeep ninyo? Ang gusto ko yung 1,400 na jeep na residente ng Maynila, lahat ng linya na nasa loob ng Maynila, at ang mga jeepney driver na taga Maynila—I want you to serve our people for free,” said Domagoso.

The program aims to provide free transportation for passengers while ensuring stable income for jeepney drivers and operators, who have been struggling with fluctuating fuel prices and declining passenger demand.

The city government will shoulder fuel expenses to keep the vehicles running and prevent commuters from being stranded.

Under the program, participating drivers are expected to receive around ₱3,000 per day, depending on the type of vehicle. This comes as many drivers have reported earning as little as ₱200 to ₱500 daily due to the surge in fuel costs.

The free rides will operate from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 30 and 31, and will resume from April 6 to 8 following the Holy Week break. City officials estimate that the program could serve up to 100,000 passengers per day across various routes in Manila and nearby areas.

According to Moreno, the initiative was developed within 48 hours as an immediate response to the global oil price crisis, which has significantly affected both commuters and transport workers.

The Manila LGU has also released the designated routes for the program, which is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters.

"Iyong mga mamamayan sa Maynila gusto ko wala silang gastos sa loob ng isang linggo, iyong mga mananakay makatikim man lang ng ginhawa", dagdag pa ng alkalde.
