The Manila local government unit (LGU) will take charge of public utility jeepney (PUJ) operations and shoulder drivers’ incomes to offer commuters free rides amid the oil crisis.
For the initiative, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso entered into an agreement with the presidents of 22 jeepney operators and drivers associations (JODAs) during a meeting on Friday, March 27.
Domagoso announced that 1,442 jeepneys will be deployed to various routes within Manila. Under Executive Order No. 14, series of 2026, the Manila LGU will be granting drivers who offer free rides financial assistance.
According to the Manila Public Information Office (PIO), Domagoso aims to ensure that both drivers and commuters are equally provided assistance.
In Pasig, Mayor Victor “Vico” Sotto acquired five electric minibuses, which are being used to provide free rides this week.
