The number of deaths from leptospirosis in Manila has risen to 21 after four more fatalities were recorded Thursday, Aug. 27, according to the Manila Health Department.

The fatalities brought the total number of 21 deaths from leptospirosis in the city from Jan. 1 to Aug. 27, 2026.

The Manila Health Department (MHD) and City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit also reported 45 new leptospirosis cases Thursday, bringing the city's total to 401.

The MHD said the figures were based on its daily reporting of water-borne, food-borne and leptospirosis diseases.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease commonly associated with exposure to water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals. The risk of infection can increase during the rainy season, particularly in areas affected by flooding.

The health department urged Manila residents to remain vigilant and maintain cleanliness to help prevent the spread of diseases during the rainy season.

Aside from leptospirosis, Manila recorded 33 new dengue cases, 27 cases of influenza-like illness and five cases of severe acute respiratory infection on Thursday, the MHD said.
