Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso announced that the city’s Libreng Sakay (Free Ride) Program will not be extended beyond Wednesday, April 8, pending a review of its effects.
Launched from March 30–31 and April 6–8, the five-day initiative provided free transportation for commuters while also supporting local drivers and operators amid rising fuel prices.
Mayor Domagoso said the city government will assess the program’s impact to determine the next steps, aiming for a more efficient implementation that can benefit more residents. He also assured that they will continue to take measures to assist Manileños affected by the ongoing crisis.
The temporary suspension allows city officials to study the program’s outcomes and plan improvements before potentially resuming free rides in the future.
As of 2:00 PM on April 8, the program has served 103,953 passengers, with 1,128 active jeepneys providing free rides. The city assured that it will continue exploring measures to assist Manila residents affected by the ongoing fuel and transportation challenges.
