The long-standing rivalry between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the Magnolia Hotshots will once again take center stage as they collide in the opening game of the Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) 50th season on Sunday, October 5, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Dubbed the Manila Clasico, the showdown promises fireworks as two of the league’s most popular franchises rekindle their storied feud to kick off a milestone year for Asia’s first professional basketball league. Fans are expected to pack the venue, eager for another chapter in the heated rivalry.
Ginebra, under multi-titled coach Tim Cone, will bank on its “Never Say Die” spirit with Christian Standhardinger, Scottie Thompson, and rookie RJ Abarrientos leading the charge.
Magnolia, meanwhile, ushers in a new era with LA Tenorio taking over as playing-coach. The Hotshots will counter with their trademark defensive intensity and a balanced attack anchored by Paul Lee, Mark Barroca, and Ian Sangalang.
League officials announced that the PBA’s golden season will feature a series of commemorative activities. Saturday, October 4, will host fan-centered festivities, while the Leo Awards will precede the highly anticipated tip-off at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
“At 50, we are healthy, strong, and ready to face the next 50 years. The PBA remains solid now at 50 and looks forward to the next 50 with much enthusiasm,” said PBA chairman Ricky Vargas in a video message.
