A 31-year-old man was shot and killed after being mistaken for a wild boar by his own uncle in Brgy. San Pedro, Jaro, Leyte.

The victim, known by the alias "Jojo," was a farmer and resident of Jaro, Leyte who was accidentally shot by his 43-year-old uncle, “Perper,” around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, after the latter mistakenly fired an improvised firearm at the victim during a hunting trip.

According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the two men went into the mountains of Brgy. San Pedro to hunt wild boars and decided to split up to cover more ground.

After several hours, the suspect reportedly heard rustling in the nearby bushes. Assuming it was a wild boar, he fired his homemade shotgun toward the sound.

It was only afterward that the suspect realized, to his shock, that he had accidentally shot his own nephew.

The victim was rushed to the Carigara District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect voluntarily surrendered to authorities and is now under the custody of the Jaro Municipal Police Station, where he will face appropriate charges.
