The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is targeting to complete the long-delayed Malabog Flyover in Daraga, Albay within two years after the project stalled for nearly five years.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the original contract with Discaya-owned Alpha Omega Corporation has been terminated due to prolonged delays. The project will be rebid this February to fast-track its completion.
The move follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to ensure that all public infrastructure projects are completed by private contractors within the agreed timelines and government contracts.
According to Dizon, construction of the Malabog Flyover started in 2021 but remains unfinished up to now, despite its importance in easing traffic congestion from the Bicol International Airport to the Maharlika Highway.
“Discaya project pala ito. Alpha Omega ito. So tine-terminate na namin. So ngayong February, ipapa-bid natin ng bago. May pondo naman ito ng 2026. Kailangan lang ipa-bid, terminate si Discaya, tatapusin na natin. Baka naman kaya natin ng one year, one year and a half,” Dizon said during an inspection of the site on Sunday as part of the rehabilitation of the Maharlika Highway.
The Malabog Flyover is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and road safety in the area once completed.
