The Makabayan bloc supported the decision of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to disqualify the Duterte Youth Partylist's registration, RH 12 Milky Rigonan reported.
Several groups including Gabriela Youth, Anakbayan, and Kabataan Tayo ang Pag-asa called on the COMELEC to disqualify the Duterte Youth Partylist from the 2025 midterm elections and the partylist system, citing its alleged “misrepresentation” of the youth sector.
Kabataan Partylist Representative Renee Co stated that Duterte Youth is not a true representative of the youth but a fake organization created only to strengthen the political machinery of the Duterte family.
Co said that the Duterte Youth was never a true representative of the youth in Congress, but it served as a vehicle for red-tagging and attacking progressive youth organizations while pretending to be a legitimate sectoral representative.
In a ruling of COMELEC where there is a 5-1-1 vote, the COMELEC en banc upheld the Second Division's June 18 decision to cancel the group's registration.
Meanwhile, with Duterte Youth disqualified, the Gabriela Women’s Partylist will take its seat in the House, to be represented by Sara Elago, to which the Makabayan bloc urged COMELEC to immediately proclaim.
