Southern Mindanao continues to experience a series of aftershocks following the June 8, 2026 magnitude 7.8 offshore Sarangani earthquake, with the latest magnitude 5.2 tremor shaking parts of the region on Wednesday morning.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed that the 9:54 AM earthquake is part of the ongoing aftershock sequence of the powerful mainshock.
In its Earthquake Information No. 1, PHIVOLCS said the magnitude 5.2 quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, with an epicenter located at 05.92°N, 125.17°E, or around 11 kilometers north 19° west of Glan, Sarangani.
The tremor was felt at Intensity III in Malapatan, Sarangani, and in parts of General Santos City. No damage is expected based on initial assessment, though authorities reiterated that aftershocks remain likely.
Earlier in the day, at 2:09 AM, another aftershock was recorded with a magnitude of 5.1, this time striking Sarangani Island in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental—also linked to the June 8 main earthquake.
PHIVOLCS reported the following instrumental intensities for the earlier tremor:
- Intensity II – City of Digos and Matanao (Davao del Sur); Sta. Maria (Davao Occidental); Malungon (Sarangani)
- Intensity I – Magsaysay (Davao del Sur); Kiamba (Sarangani)
Both earthquakes are classified as aftershocks of the June 8 magnitude 7.8 offshore Sarangani quake, which continues to generate seismic activity across parts of Southern Mindanao.
As of this writing, authorities reported that the death toll from the June 8 earthquake has risen to 45.
Rescue and retrieval operations are still ongoing in several affected areas as emergency teams continue to search for survivors and assess damage.
Officials continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and to monitor updates from PHIVOLCS and disaster response agencies as aftershocks are expected to persist.
