A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the waters off Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Saturday, August 1, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs reported that the earthquake struck at 10:42 a.m. with a depth of 10 kilometers (km) and was located about 86 kilometers (km) south, east of Balut Island.
The following intensities were recorded:
Intensity I
- General Santos City
- The municipalities of T'Boli and Tupi in South Cotabato
- Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat
The state volcanologist said the tremor was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Sarangani and the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that hit Davao Occidental in June.
The agency said no damage is expected from the earthquake.
However, Phivolcs warned that additional aftershocks remain possible as seismic activity continues in the area.
