Batanes was jolted by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake on Wednesday afternoon, said state seismologists.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) initially reported the earthquake at magnitude 5.7 before revising it down to magnitude 4.8.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the tectonic quake hit the waters off Itbayat at around 12:22 p.m. with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Intensity I was felt at Claveria, Cagayan and Bacarra, Ilocos Norte.

Aftershocks are expected to follow.
