A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck the waters off Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Sunday morning, August 30, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

PHIVOLCS said the earthquake occurred at 11:42 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers. Its epicenter was located at 05.26°N, 125.41°E, approximately 16 kilometers south 4° west of Balut Island.

The earthquake was recorded at Intensity I in General Santos City, indicating that the tremor was weakly felt in the area.

In its Earthquake Information No. 1, PHIVOLCS classified the event as an aftershock of the June 2026 earthquakes, including the magnitude 7.8 offshore Sarangani earthquake and the magnitude 6.5 offshore Davao Occidental earthquake.

“This is an aftershock of the 2026 June Mw7.8 Offshore Sarangani and Mw6.5 Offshore Davao Occidental earthquake,” PHIVOLCS said.

No other instrumental intensities were reported in the initial bulletin.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity in the area following the major offshore earthquakes recorded in June.
