Baguio City Mayor Benjamin “Benjie” Magalong released an official statement on Saturday, September 27, clarifying issues on alleged conflict of interest.

It was earlier reported that Magalong suddenly resigned on Friday, September 26, as special adviser of the newly formed Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), intended to investigate flood control and other infrastructure issues.

In a press briefing held the same day of resignation, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro stated that his dual role as both adviser and city mayor may pose a ‘conflict of interest.’

This came after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. ordered a review of his appointment in the ICI, prompted by concerns surrounding a tennis court project in Baguio City involving St. Gerrard Construction Company, a firm by the Discaya family, which is also tied to an anomalous flood control controversy.

Magalong posted on his social media page today regarding his resignation, writing, “This was not an easy choice, but one I believe is necessary.”

“Once and for all, I would like to make it clear that there is no conflict of interest in my role,” Magalong stated, denying any conflict of interest in serving two roles.

He emphasized that his work in both roles has been guided by integrity and a commitment to public service. However, Magalong expressed concern over recent developments that, according to him, have raised questions about the commission’s independence. He stressed that independence is essential to ensuring accountability, and without it, the ICI's credibility is at risk.

"I refuse to allow these doubts to weaken the ICI and its mandate. That is why I have chosen to step aside, not to abandon the fight, but to protect the very integrity of the fight," he said, standing firm in his decision as he addressed the growing concerns surrounding the commission.

The mayor reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to truth and justice, stating that his decision to resign from the ICI would not deter him from continuing his fight against corruption.

He also emphasized that his resolve remains strong, whether inside or outside the commission.

Magalong further cited his long-standing track record in pursuing accountability, referencing his involvement in the Mamasapano investigation, the ninja cops probe, and his stand against traditional politics, as part of his continued effort to hold those who squander public funds accountable.

“We should never allow corrupt political leaders and bureaucrats to steal the future of our children, and most importantly, the future of our country,” he said, delivering a sharp rebuke against systemic corruption. “Every peso stolen from the people is not just an act of theft. It is a school left unfinished, a hospital without medicine, a bridge that collapses, and a nation's hopes betrayed. The greatest injustice is that corruption robs the people of their safety and their future.”

Moreover, Magalong called for vigilance, courage, and a strong sense of nationalism in the ongoing fight against corruption among fellow Filipinos. He emphasized that corruption must not be allowed to define the nation’s future and urged Filipinos to unite in demanding transparency, accountability, and good governance for the benefit of current and future generations.

Magalong acknowledged that the battle against deeply rooted corruption would be long and challenging, but he expressed confidence in the Filipino spirit of resilience and determination, stressing that sustained vigilance and collective action are essential to overcoming these challenges. He also asserted that the power of the people will ultimately triumph over the influence of a few.

The mayor ended his statement by saying, “The crusade against corruption continues.”
