The Luzon and Visayas power grids are now back to "normal conditions" on Saturday morning after three straight days under yellow and red alerts this week, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

Based on 10:30 a.m. operating data, the Luzon grid recorded an available capacity of 15,799 megawatts (MW) against a demand of 12,107 MW.

“The declaration of full capacity by GNPD 1 (668MW), EERI 2 (422MW), and EERI 3 (420MW) increased Luzon’s available capacity by a total of 1,510MW,” NGCP said.

It added that the increase in supply, combined with typically lower weekend demand, resulted in surplus capacity that allowed power exports from Luzon to the Visayas grid.

“Combined with the typically lower system demand during weekends, the resulting surplus capacity has enabled power exports from the Luzon grid to the Visayas grid,” it added.

The Visayas grid also remained in normal condition, with available capacity of 2,768 MW versus demand of 2,339 MW. NGCP confirmed that the Mindanao grid is likewise operating normally.

“The Visayas and Mindanao grids are also operating under normal conditions,” the transmission operator said.

It added that the system is expected to remain stable barring unexpected demand spikes or further unplanned outages.

The return to normal operations comes after several days of grid stress, when Luzon and Visayas were placed under yellow and red alert status due to tight power supply conditions caused by multiple plant outages and derated capacities.

In response to recent disruptions, the Department of Energy (Department of Energy (Philippines)) DOE Philippines Official Website earlier directed NGCP to explain transmission line failures that contributed to rotational brownouts across Luzon.
