The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show-cause order (SCO) against a tricycle driver who allegedly hit a child crossing a designated pedestrian lane in Antipolo City, Rizal, and ordered the preventive suspension of the driver's license for 90 days.
In a statement on Tuesday, Oct. 20, the LTO said the incident occurred on Oct. 18 along Sumulong Memorial Circle Road, in front of PLDT Antipolo.
A dashcam footage obtained by the agency showed the tricycle traveling at high speed before hitting the child, who was crossing the pedestrian lane, the LTO said.
LTO Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao immediately ordered authorities to identify the driver and initiate an investigation following the incident.
The driver was directed to appear before the agency's Intelligence and Investigation Division at the LTO Central Office on Oct. 28, 2026, to submit a sworn statement, explain his side and present documents relevant to the case.
The driver may face charges for failure to yield the right of way and reckless driving for allegedly failing to give way to the child and operating the tricycle at high speed on a public road.
If the violations are established through due process, the driver could also be declared an improper person to operate a motor vehicle, which may serve as grounds for the suspension or revocation of his license, the LTO said.
As an interim measure, the driver was ordered to surrender his license for a 90-day preventive suspension. The tricycle involved in the incident has also been placed under alarm status, according to the agency.
"Hindi dapat isinasantabi ang kaligtasan ng mga pedestrian, lalo na ng mga bata," Lacanilao said, stressing that drivers are responsible for remaining cautious and alert on the road and respecting pedestrians' right to cross safely.
He said the LTO would continue strengthening its monitoring of pedestrian lanes to protect all road users.
The agency also urged the public to report similar incidents so authorities could investigate promptly and hold violators accountable.
