The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a Show Cause Order (SCO) against the driver of a Mitsubishi L300 involved in a road accident that injured a student crossing a pedestrian lane in San Mateo, Rizal.

According to the LTO, the incident occurred on June 18, along General Luna Avenue in Barangay Ampid 2. Video footage showed the student crossing at a designated pedestrian lane while a public utility vehicle (PUV) stopped to give way. However, the Mitsubishi L300 allegedly failed to yield and struck the student, causing injuries that required immediate hospital treatment.

Under the directive of LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao, the driver’s license was ordered surrendered and placed under a 90-day preventive suspension while the case is being investigated. The vehicle was also placed under alarm status.

The driver and registered owner were directed to explain why they should not be held liable for reckless driving and failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian, as well as why the driver should not face license revocation, suspension, or disqualification.

“Hindi natin palalampasin ang anumang uri ng kapabayaan sa pagmamaneho na naglalagay sa buhay ng ating mga kababayan sa panganib. Ang mga pedestrian lane ay itinalaga upang maging ligtas na tawiran ng publiko, at inaasahan natin ang lahat ng motorista na igalang ito,” Lacanilao said.

The LTO emphasized that road safety remains a top priority and warned that violations endangering the public will be dealt with swiftly in accordance with the law.
