The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Monday announced that fare increases for Light Rail Transit Authority (LRT) Line 1 and Line 2 will be implemented starting August 2.
The fare hike decision comes after Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista's meeting with President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on June 6.
According to the DOTr's statement, the minimum boarding fee for LRT will increase to ₱13.29 from ₱11, and the charge per kilometer will rise to ₱1.21 from ₱1.
Despite the previous deferral of the fare hike due to concerns about its impact on commuters, the DOTr believes that it is the appropriate time to proceed with the fare adjustment, now that the country's economy has improved and inflation rate eased.
The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the private entity that operates LRT-1, has also released its updated fare matrix.
