Living the vow: A devotee’s Panata, tradition and life with the Jesus Nazareno

Annually, on the ninth day of January, Manila transforms into a living testament of faith. Streets overflow with barefoot devotees, hands raised, bodies pressed together in a sea of maroon as the image of the Black Nazarene journeys through the city.

For outsiders, the Traslacion may appear overwhelming—even chaotic. For devotees, however, it is deeply personal: the fulfillment of a ‘panata’, a sacred vow rooted in gratitude, endurance, and unwavering belief.

For Juanito Tan Jr., Balangay Chairman of Hijos del Nazareno–Central, the Traslacion is not merely an annual religious event. It is a lifelong commitment shaped by family, service, and lived experience.

“Iba-iba ang calling namin… Sa akin kasi sa pamilya, minana ko na sa aking mga magulang, itinuloy ko na lang," Tan said in an interview with DZRH's Public Service Hour.

A Faith Passed Down, A Vow Lived Daily

Tan has been a devotee of the Black Nazarene for nearly 28 years, with 18 years spent actively serving at the Quiapo Church. What began as a personal devotion has since become a family vocation.

“Buong pamilya na po kami naglilingkod ngayon sa simbahan ng Quiapo,” Tan said, further sharing that his children have also joined their group as Hijos while his wife serves as a collector at the Quiapo church.

“Kumbaga yung aming buong buhay, umiikot sa bahay, sa hanapbuhay, simbahan.”

For many Filipino Catholics, panata is not a one-time promise but a way of life—an enduring expression of gratitude that continues long after prayers are answered.

When Prayer Becomes a Lifeline

Tan’s devotion deepened during moments of crisis, particularly when his children fell gravely ill. His eldest, still an infant then, developed severe boils and swelling, leaving doctors uncertain.

“Ang ginawa ko po, isinimba ko po siya dito sa simbahan ng Quiapo… Bumulong ako sa Nazareno ‘kung hindi po akin, kunin niyo na po. Pero kung akin naman po, pagalingin niyo po siya’.”

Within a week, Tan said his child recovered. A similar experience followed when his second child suffered convulsions from a dangerously high fever, to which he also prayed upon the Jesus Nazarene.

“Bumili ako ng panyo ng Nazareno, ipinahid ko po sa altar… Kinabukasan po ma’am, ang baba na po nung nagnatong anak ko.”

For Tan, these moments reaffirmed the core of devotion—faith without doubt.

“Basta ‘yong pananampalataya, atsaka ‘yong paniniwala, ‘yon ‘yong huwag mawawala. Kasi kapag ikaw nagduda, iba na iyon.”

Worship in Service, Not Spectacle

Beyond the massive procession is a disciplined structure of service. As Balangay Chairman, Tan helps oversee tens of thousands of devotees tasked with pulling the ropes, forming human barriers, and protecting the shrine during the Traslacion.

Their work ensures that reverence is preserved amid the intensity of the procession.

For this year's Traslacion, Tan’s message to devotees—especially the youth—is a call for reflection and responsibility.

“Yun lang naman ang mensahe ng aming kura paroko, yung pagsamba, hindi pagsampa.”

He cautioned against mistaking physical proximity to the andas for the depth of one’s prayer, emphasizing that true devotion is rooted in humility and worship.

“Ang pinakamataas na panalangin ay yung pagsisimba… hindi oras ng prusisyon.”

In a world marked by uncertainty and change, the Traslacion remains a powerful expression of Filipino Catholic faith. It is a collective journey of remembrance—of vows made in desperation, fulfilled in grace, and renewed through service.

For Juanito Tan Jr., the Traslacion is not defined by the crowd or the distance walked barefoot, but by a lifetime of gratitude.

“Habang nabubuhay ako, maglilingkod ako sa iyo.”

And with every step taken in faith, the meaning of panata lives on—deep, personal, and enduring.
