The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on December 10 through a Facebook post that free rides on LRT and MRT lines would be offered on selected dates for specific sectors. December 22 was designated for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and solo parents.
The announcement quickly drew mixed reactions online, sparking lively discussions among netizens. Some shared humorous posts about dressing in full glam or wearing more boyish outfits to signal their identity, while others joked about having to disclose their sexuality—raising privacy concerns.
To clear up the confusion, the DOTr later explained that no proof or disclosure is required, as commuters only need to state that they are eligible for the free ride.
Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Vilar Cendana shared their thoughts on the initiative, writing in a post caption, “Itong free LRT and MRT Ride for LGBTQIA+ is tantamount to the government recognizing us as an official sector. Na bahagi rin tayo ng lipunan gaya ng mga kababaihan, solo parents, estudyante, at mga senior citizen.”
Cendana also expressed hope that recognition and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ individuals would go beyond executive actions, urging Congress to further address their rights through legislation.
Meanwhile, Ang Ladlad LGBT Party-list welcomed the initiative, describing it as “symbolic acts of inclusion” that reflect the everyday struggles faced by the community.
The group also pointed out that the Supreme Court affirmed that moral disapproval is not a valid reason to deny the rights and participation of LGBTQIA+ members.
“Equality is not special treatment—it is justice,” it quoted.
