Mamamayang Liberal Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima expressed alarm over a second school shooting just two months after three were shot dead and 20 more injured in Tacloban City, and called for “urgent and effective” safeguards to prevent another recurrence.
“Ano nang nangyayari?! Paano na naman naipasok ang baril sa paaralan? It’s very alarming that less than two months after the Tacloban school shooting, another act of violence like this has occurred,” she said in a statement posted on social media.
The lawmaker believes the act may have been influenced by the “bad side of social media” and video games, and urged that immediate and appropriate measures be taken to avoid similar incidents of violence in the future.
“Forms of violence never seen before in our country. Urgent and effective safeguards are needed to prevent similar tragic incidents,” she said.
De Lima extended her condolences to the families of the two victims, offered prayers for the nine injured, and appealed for proper guidance for students, parents, teachers, and staff affected by the incident.
The Tuesday shooting incident claimed the lives of two male students at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) Junior High School.
Police reported that the eighth-grade suspect was wielding a 9mm Glock pistol when he entered the building’s Room 404 and shot one student unprovoked.
Moreover, he streamed the incident live through his Facebook account, said Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
