Quezon City 5th District Representative Patrick Michael "PM" Vargas is urging the swift passage of a proposed measure promoting bicycle use as the country grapples with rising fuel costs linked to tensions in the Middle East.

The lawmaker renewed his call for the immediate approval of the Philippine Bicycle Act, emphasizing the need for sustainable and cost-efficient transportation alternatives for Filipinos.

Vargas said House Bill 7106 seeks to expand the network of bike lanes initially developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to institutionalize and improve cycling infrastructure nationwide.

He emphasized that the measure not only promotes environmental protection but also reduces the country’s reliance on imported oil while helping improve fuel and energy resilience.

The lawmaker also called on the private sector to support the initiative by establishing bike-friendly facilities such as showers and lockers in workplaces to encourage more employees to cycle.

To further incentivize participation, the proposed measure includes tax perks for employers, allowing expenses for bicycles and related facilities to be deducted from their gross income.

Vargas stressed that the measure serves as a practical response to the oil price crisis, offering Filipinos a more sustainable, affordable, and health-conscious mode of transportation.
