A landslide at a landfill in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City, has left one person dead while 30 others remain missing, according to city officials.
As of 7:35 p.m., authorities said seven individuals were rescued from the collapsed Material Recovery Facility (MRF). One of the rescued victims was declared dead, while three others remain in critical condition.
According to Talamban City Councilor Joel Garganera, among the 30 trapped personnel are 22 employees of Prime Waste Solutions and eight from private contractors—six from Girtech and two from MAA.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival confirmed that disaster response teams and first responders were immediately deployed following reports of people trapped under the rubble.
“Based on preliminary reports, there are people trapped, and medical assistance and emergency support are now on site,” Archival said.
“I am closely monitoring the situation, and I will proceed to the Binaliw landfill as soon as possible to personally assess the situation and coordinate the next actions. We ask the public to remain calm and to avoid the area for now so our responders can operate properly,” he added.
Archival said official and verified updates will be released through the city’s official channels.
In an emailed statement, Prime Waste Solutions Cebu confirmed that a landslide occurred at its waste management facility in Barangay Binaliw at around 4 p.m. on Thursday.
The landfill operator said it is “working closely with relevant government agencies and the local government to provide the necessary assistance and support to all those affected by the incident.”
Prime Waste Solutions Cebu also announced the suspension of its operations and appealed to the public to refrain from going near the affected area.
“The safety and well-being of our employees, contractors, and neighboring communities remain our top priority,” the company said, adding that it will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.
