President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s recent meeting with former Vice President and current Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo may have been aimed purely at supporting the city’s disaster response efforts, according to Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.
During an interview at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) homecoming, Lacson said that the President had previously coordinated with the Senate on the Local Government Support Fund.
He added that it is difficult to draw conclusions from the meeting between the former political rivals.
“It’s hard to speculate…ang pag-uusapan nila. But ang alam ko lang is nagrequest noon si President [Marcos] sa amin, sa Senate to allocate appropriate funds for the local support, government fund to augment whatever needs not only Naga City but all local government units gusto niyang mag-... those hard-hit by typhoons by calamities. Malamang ‘yun ang main agenda nila,” Lacson said.
Lacson, was speaking during the PMA Alumni Homecoming 2026 in Baguio City on Saturday, where he was the guest of honor and speaker. He received arrival honors at Fort Gregorio del Pilar.
On the same day, Marcos met with Robredo in Naga City to discuss the city’s flood control system. He also joined local officials for the launch of “Oplan Kontra Baha,“ a disaster preparedness initiative.
Earlier, Marcos dismissed speculation that his visit had political motives, amid talk of potential alliances ahead of the 2028 elections.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Robredo said that her current focus is on serving her constituents in Naga City and did not directly answer questions about the possibility of running for president again in the 2028 national elections, potentially against Vice President Sara Duterte.
