The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has confirmed the relief of Colonel Raymund Dante Lachica as commander of the AFP Security and Protection Group (ASPG), formerly known as the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG), Edniel Parrosa reported.
According to AFP Public Affairs Chief Colonel Xerxes Trinidad, Lachica’s reassignment is connected to a case he is facing before the Office of the Ombudsman over the alleged misuse of Vice President Sara Duterte’s confidential funds.
It can be recalled that the House of Representatives recommended the filing of plunder, technical malversation, bribery, and corruption charges against Lachica and another security aide, Colonel Dennis Nolasco, for their supposed involvement in the issue.
Effective October 4, Colonel Lachica was reassigned to his regular post as a member of the Philippine Army.
Meanwhile, Army Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Israel Eleosida has been designated as the acting commander of the AFP Security and Protection Group.
Trinidad emphasized that it is not only the duty of the ASPG to protect the Vice President, but also other identified VIPs.
"The [role of] AFPSPG or ASPG is to provide security and protection detail to the Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines and other authorized VIPs," said Trinidad.
