Nearly all lechon establishments in La Loma, Quezon City—widely known as the “Lechon Capital of the Philippines”—have been ordered to temporarily close following the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the area.

At least 14 lechon businesses in La Loma were temporarily closed leaving many workers uncertain about their livelihoods and causing unsold lechon, barbeque, and other products.

One staff member shared how the shutdown has affected his family as the Christmas season approaches.

“Malungkot kasi katulad niyan hindi namin alam kuing kelan magbubukas kasi katulad ko ito lang inaasahan ko tapos ‘yong mga anak ko dito lang ako umaasa,” she said.

RH Val Gonzales reported that the Quezon City government has deployed checkpoints to monitor the entry of hogs from different provinces.

Officials believe the ASF virus may have come from hogs transported from outside the city, prompting authorities to impose an immediate closure of lechon shops to prevent further spread.

City authorities have yet to announce when the establishments will be allowed to reopen, pending ongoing monitoring and containment measures.

Meanwhile, following the closure of several lechon establishments, Mayor Joy Belmonte held discussions with the owners of lechon shops in La Loma. The meeting aimed to improve operations and ensure that products sold in La Loma are clean and safe.
