Jalen Brunson delivered a statement performance as the New York Knicks outlasted the Cleveland Cavaliers, 115-104 in overtime, to draw first blood in the Eastern Conference Finals on Wednesday (Philippine Time).

Brunson erupted for 38 points to anchor a gritty Knicks comeback after Cleveland controlled long stretches of Game 1, only to unravel late in regulation and falter in the extra period.

The Cavaliers looked poised to steal the opener on the road after building an 83-69 lead through three quarters, but New York stormed back behind timely defense and clutch shot-making to force a 101-101 deadlock at the end of regulation.

From there, the Knicks seized full control in overtime, overwhelming Cleveland 14-3 in the extra frame to secure the win.

Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 29 points, while Cleveland’s early rhythm in the first half was highlighted by his all-around effort. Mitchell had 16 points at halftime along with three steals and three rebounds, keeping the Cavaliers afloat despite persistent turnover issues.

Cleveland’s ball security remained a major concern throughout the game. The Cavaliers committed 11 turnovers in the first half alone, leading to 15 New York points, a problem that resurfaced in critical moments down the stretch.

At halftime, Cleveland held a narrow 48-46 advantage after flipping the momentum in the second quarter. The Cavaliers had initially trailed 23-16 after the first period, when New York’s 12-0 run exposed Cleveland’s early offensive stagnation and forced mistakes. The Knicks capitalized on five first-quarter turnovers that led to six points.

Despite that shaky start, Cleveland steadied itself behind Mitchell, along with contributions from James Harden, who finished with seven points, two assists and three rebounds, and Evan Mobley, who added five points, two assists and five rebounds.

But the second half told a different story. The Cavaliers surged ahead 83-69 after three quarters, seemingly in control before New York’s late-game push flipped the narrative entirely.

Brunson’s scoring surge, paired with a tightened Knicks defense, erased the deficit and forced overtime, where Cleveland had no answer for New York’s closing run.

The Knicks now take a 1-0 series lead as the Eastern Conference Finals continue, while the Cavaliers are left to regroup after letting a commanding position slip away.
