Katherine Claudette Tandoc, a Family Life and Child Development Specialist, emphasized in an interview on Expert's Opinion, the importance of mothers in shaping their children, especially during their formative years. She described mothers as the “light of the home” because they provide guidance, direction, and wisdom within the family.
According to Tandoc, the presence and active guidance of mothers are crucial while children are growing up, particularly from ages zero to eight, as children begin to learn and understand the world around them.
“Ang mga mothers kasi, they are gifted with wisdom to nurture and guide the children in the formative years,” she explained.
She also pointed out that mothers are often the first to understand their children’s needs even before they can speak, highlighting the natural ability of mothers to care for and connect deeply with their children.
“Kaya yung iyak, alam na alam ng nanay yan. Ito ba ay iyak dahil basa siya? Ito ba ay iyak dahil may nararamdaman siya? Masakit ang tiyan? Ito ba ay iyak dahil naiinitan siya?” she said.
Tandoc also raised concerns over the increasing use of gadgets as substitutes for parental care, expressing concern that some children are becoming more attached to gadgets than to their parents.
Despite the changes brought by the digital age, Tandoc stressed that open communication and emotional connection between parents and children remain essential. For her, being a good mother is not about being perfect, but about showing unconditional love and dedication to the family.
